At Broadway Gynecology, in the Financial District of New York City, New York. What is diagnostic ultrasound?
Based on the sonic ability of bats, diagnostic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create visual pictures of internal organs in the body. First used for diagnostic purposes in the 1950’s, today ultrasounds are performed as a part of routine prenatal care. However, the clinical use of ultrasound goes far beyond telling the gender of an unborn baby. Because it’s non-invasive, meaning it doesn’t require opening the body, diagnostic ultrasound is used to see injuries to soft tissue, cancerous and non-cancerous tumors, blood flow into and away from organs, and structural anomalies inside the body.
What can I expect from an ultrasound?
Broadway Gynecology most commonly performs 4 types of ultrasound examinations – transvaginal scans, advanced scans, fetal scans and Doppler scans. Transvaginal scans require the insertion of an ultrasonic wand into the vagina in order to see the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, vagina, and cervix. Advanced scans are used to examine the breasts for masses or other anomalies. Fetal ultrasounds examine a fetus for growth, anatomical problems, or birth defects while Doppler scans can be performed during any ultrasound examination to look at the blood flow into or out of an organ. Prior to your ultrasound, your nurse will give you detailed instructions on how to prepare for your ultrasound. Since ultrasound examinations are non-invasive, there’s no recovery time and you can return to normal activities the same day.
